The First Breeders' Cup
An exclusive account of what happened November 10, 1984.

It was back in 1984, that I remember when my brother and I went to the store to get a Racing Form. It was going to be the very first race of the Breeders’ Cup in history, running at Hollywood Park racetrack, in Inglewood California.

I remember looking at the Racing Form and seeing the first race was going to be the Juvenile race. I remember looking at this horse called Chief’s Crown in the Racing Form flying in from New York. The day before the Breeders’ Cup I was talking to my brother Kenny and I asked him about this horse number 5 Chief’s Crown. Kenny told me the horse had a good chance of winning the race. I asked him if we were going to the Breeders’ Cup and he said no doubt.

The next morning I got up, got in my brother’s truck and drove all the way from Corona to Inglewood, California. My brother tried to get some passes to go into the backstretch, which he did. So we had all-day passes.

We get into the backstretch and the horses for the first race were in the receiving barn and I remember watching them walk around the receiving barn before they let them come across for the race. On the backstretch you could see the entire crowd, there were so many people, it was ridiculous, it was beautiful. We were out, standing at the receiving barn with all the horses to getting ready to go out to the other side to get saddled. My brother Kenny was there with his friend Terry Morris and all of a sudden we get a call that the horses were getting ready to get saddled up. I remember telling my brother Kenny, “Kenny I’m going over with the first race, I want to go over with this horse named Chief’s Crown”, and my brother said all right you just be careful son.
